Community Garden
Participating in Vera Court’s Community Garden is a great way to grow your own food, spend time outside, and meet neighbors.
There are thirty plots available. Next to the garden plots is our compost pile where community members can dump their food scraps, and the compost will then be used to fertilize the garden plots.
Most gardeners return year after year but usually a few new plots open up each year. Stop by the center to apply for a plot!
Registration & Cost
We will begin accepting applications in early April. Payment must be submitted along with the application at the center. We accept cash or check.
Dates
Our growing season is April – October.
No Chemical Fertilizers, Herbicides or Pesticides
Vera Court Community Garden strives to be a natural, organic space with an emphasis on sustainability. No chemical fertilizers (Miracle-Gro, ammonium nitrate, or urea). Never use any herbicides (weed killers), or pesticides!
Dane County Extension at (608) 224-3700 can give safe pest-control advice.
A Community Led Initiative
Our community garden has its roots in our community members desire to produce their own healthy food in their own neighborhood. In 2014, with the help of our community police officer, the Vera Court Community Garden was started in the field behind the center.
Neighbors were involved from mapping out where the garden plots would go and the regular maintenance the garden required.
A few plots continue to be reserved for our youth programming to use in their garden club.

In 2014 our community garden began.

Neighbors were at the heart of the creation of the garden.

Our community officer at the time supported the initiative to build a garden in Vera Court's backyard.

Neighbors were involved from planning where the plots would be built to the regular garden maintenance.
